Fees & pricing transparency

Price information published in line with the SRA Transparency Rules 2018. For anything not listed below, we agree a fixed quote in writing before any work begins.

The SRA requires solicitors to publish price and service information for a specific set of matters. Below is that information for each service we offer within scope of the rules, including what's included, likely additional costs, key stages and typical timescales. Unless stated otherwise, VAT is charged at the standard rate, currently 20%.

Government fees quoted below (court, Land Registry, Home Office, probate and Gazette fees) are taken from gov.uk and thegazette.co.uk and were correct at the time of publishing [add publish date]. These are reviewed periodically by the relevant government bodies — please check gov.uk for the current fee before relying on a figure here, or ask us to confirm it for your case.

Employment tribunal claims (unfair or wrongful dismissal)

£3,000–£20,000+ total cost, charged on an hourly basis

Plus VAT at 20%. [Confirm hourly rate(s) by fee-earner grade.] The total depends on the complexity of the claim, whether discrimination is alleged, and how many hearing days are needed.

What's included
  • Reviewing your case and advising on prospects of success
  • Advice on and drafting the ET1 claim or ET3 response
  • Correspondence with the other side and the Tribunal
  • Preparing for and attending a final hearing (one day)
Likely additional costs
  • Tribunal issue fee — none. There is currently no fee to submit a claim to an employment tribunal (gov.uk)
  • Barrister's fees for hearing advocacy, if instructed — [add typical range]
  • Additional hearing days beyond the first
  • Expert reports or witness costs, where needed
Key stages
  1. Initial advice and case assessment
  2. Early conciliation through Acas, where required
  3. Drafting and filing the claim or response
  4. Case management and evidence preparation
  5. Final hearing and judgment
Typical timescale

Straightforward claims are often resolved within [3–6 months]; contested claims proceeding to a full hearing can take [9–18 months], depending on Tribunal listing times.

Uncontested probate (all assets in the UK)

£750–£2,000 fixed fee, or [confirm]% of the estate's value for larger or more complex estates

Plus VAT at 20%. We'll confirm which pricing basis applies once we know the size and complexity of the estate.

What's included
  • Identifying the assets and liabilities of the estate
  • Preparing the probate application and any HMRC inheritance tax forms required
  • Obtaining the Grant of Probate
  • Collecting in assets and settling debts
  • Distributing the estate to beneficiaries
Likely additional costs
  • HMCTS probate application fee — £526 where the estate is worth more than £5,000 (no fee if £5,000 or under)
  • Additional sealed copies of the grant — £2 each if ordered with the application, £16 each if ordered later
  • Statutory notices to protect against unexpected claims: a deceased estates notice in The London Gazette (£96.55 + VAT) and a notice in a local newspaper — [add typical local paper cost, which varies by publication]
  • Inheritance tax due to HMRC, if any (this is separate from our fee)
  • Selling or transferring any property in the estate (quoted separately)
Key stages
  1. Initial meeting and gathering estate information
  2. Valuing the estate and identifying any tax due
  3. Applying for the Grant of Probate
  4. Collecting assets and paying debts and tax
  5. Preparing estate accounts and distributing to beneficiaries
Typical timescale

Straightforward, uncontested estates typically complete within [6–12 months]. Estates with property to sell, or Inheritance Tax to pay, usually take longer.

Debt recovery (up to £100,000)

£150–£250 per hour, charged on an hourly basis

Plus VAT at 20%. Total cost depends on the value of the debt and whether it becomes disputed.

What's included
  • Letter before action
  • Reviewing any response received
  • Drafting and issuing court proceedings if payment isn't made
  • Requesting judgment where the debt remains unpaid and undisputed
Likely additional costs
  • Court issue fee, set by HM Courts & Tribunals Service and scaled to the debt claimed: e.g. £35 (up to £300), £205 (£3,000.01–£5,000), £455 (£5,000.01–£10,000), 5% of the claim (£10,000.01–£100,000)
  • Enforcement action if judgment isn't paid voluntarily (e.g. bailiffs, a charging order) — quoted separately
  • Additional work if the debt becomes disputed and the matter proceeds to a defended claim
  • Counsel's fees, if instructed
Key stages
  1. Letter before action
  2. If unpaid, issue court proceedings
  3. Obtain judgment, where undisputed
  4. Enforcement, if the debtor still doesn't pay
Typical timescale

Undisputed debts recovered before proceedings are issued: typically [4–8 weeks]. Where court proceedings are needed: [3–6 months], longer if the debt is disputed or enforcement is required.

Immigration (excluding asylum applications)

Hourly rate of £[confirm]–£[confirm] + VAT, or a fixed fee for straightforward applications

Plus VAT at 20%, except fees for representation before the Immigration Tribunal, which may not attract VAT — we'll confirm this for your case.

  • Completing and submitting the visa or immigration application
  • Advising on and collating supporting documents
  • Liaising with the Home Office on your behalf
Likely additional costs
  • Home Office application and biometric fees (set by the Home Office, not us) — these vary by route, e.g. £135 for a short visit visa, £819 for a Skilled Worker visa (up to 3 years, out of country), £3,226 for Indefinite Leave to Remain; check gov.uk/visa-fees for your specific route
  • Immigration Health Surcharge, where applicable — £1,035 per year for most applicants, £776 per year for students, their dependants, under-18s and Youth Mobility Scheme applicants
  • Interpreter's fees, where needed — [add typical hourly cost]
  • Attending a Home Office interview with you, if not already included
  • Appeals, if an application is refused
Key stages
  1. Initial assessment of eligibility
  2. Gathering and reviewing supporting documents
  3. Preparing and submitting the application
  4. Responding to any Home Office queries
  5. Confirmation of the decision
Typical timescale

Timescales are largely set by the Home Office rather than by us, and vary widely by route — typically [a few weeks to several months]. We'll give a realistic estimate once we know which route applies.

Residential conveyancing (freehold/leasehold sale, purchase, mortgage or remortgage)

FAQs

Fees — frequently asked questions

Will I always get a fixed price?

Not for every matter. The figures above are typical starting points, and some cases — litigation, tribunals, immigration — depend heavily on individual circumstances. Wherever we can quote a fixed fee, we will, in writing, before any billable work begins.

Are the prices above the final cost?

They're a typical range or starting point based on similar past matters. Your actual fee depends on the specifics of your case, and we'll confirm this in your engagement letter before work starts.

What if my matter isn't listed here?

The SRA only requires published pricing for the services above. For anything else, we'll agree a fixed quote or hourly rate with you in writing before starting work — see our services page or get in touch.

What can I do if I'm unhappy with a bill?

Speak to us directly in the first instance — see our complaints policy. Certain fee disputes can also be referred to the Legal Ombudsman.
